The First Shipments Have Left the BMW Group Plant Debrecen

The first train carrying finished vehicles has departed from BMW’s Debrecen plant, with operations handled by PSP Rail, the rail logistics subsidiary of Waberer’s.

According to the company’s statement on Thursday, the project is based on a rail solution instead of road transport, significantly reducing the ecological footprint. Under the contract, which runs until 2031 and is expected to generate revenues of several tens of millions of euros, the group will provide regular rail transport of finished vehicles to European ports, from where the cars will continue their journey to many markets worldwide – including the United States and China.

In the first phase of the operation starting in March, PSP Rail, the rail logistics subsidiary of Waberer’s, will carry out large-volume rail transport of finished vehicles for the BMW Group. The project foresees a gradual ramp-up: from 2027 onwards, rail services will expand further, while the served routes will cover several strategic European seaport terminals.

“We are proud that one of the world’s leading car manufacturers, the BMW Group, has chosen us as its strategic partner in this logistics project of outstanding importance. This assignment is not only a recognition of the rail logistics expertise of the Waberer’s Group, but also an international success for the Hungarian logistics sector. The project fits perfectly into our long-term strategy, the central element of which is the growing role of environmentally friendly intermodal solutions. By giving preference to rail instead of road transport, we significantly reduce the ecological footprint of transportation, thereby supporting both our partners’ and our own sustainability goals,” said Zsolt Barna, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Waberer’s Group.

A total of 110 newly developed and manufactured railway wagons, specifically optimised for vehicle transport, have entered service, equipped with the most modern safety and securing technologies. Transport operations are supported by the latest Siemens Vectron electric locomotives, guaranteeing efficiency and low emissions across the entire European route.

As stated, the project is of outstanding importance from a sustainability perspective and is fully aligned with the guidelines of the European Union’s Green Deal, which promotes the shift of transport volumes from road to rail.

The rail servicing of production at the BMW plant in Debrecen will remove several thousand lorries from the roads each year, drastically reducing carbon dioxide emissions as well as the environmental burden and the strain on road infrastructure.
