BMW and CATL Deepen Partnership to Drive Down Carbon Emissions

BMW Group and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited have signed a new cooperation agreement aimed at further strengthening their joint work on projects designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The partnership elevates relations between the two companies to a new level in the fields of sustainable development and technological innovation.

The agreement was signed on 25 February during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s visit to Beijing, China, in the presence of a high-level German business delegation.

Under the agreement, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited and BMW Group will cooperate on pilot projects examining possibilities for cross-border data transmission related to the battery passport. The aim of the parties is to further develop the reliability of data sharing, the methodology of carbon footprint calculation, and innovative accounting tools supporting the determination of the carbon footprint of batteries.

The projects will be based on the standardised automotive data ecosystem of Catena-X.

The initiatives aim to support the harmonisation of technical standards, the development of coherent and scientifically grounded policy frameworks, and the strengthening of long-term industry stability.

By exploring practical applications of the battery passport, the two companies intend to implement innovative solutions that help ensure compliance with regulations between China and the European Union and contribute to the wider adoption of global battery information and data management standards.

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited and BMW Group have been strategic partners since 2012. Their cooperation ranges from battery manufacturing to joint research and development and the creation of sustainable supply chains. The new agreement elevates this relationship to an institutional level beyond product-level cooperation, further strengthening the parties’ shared commitment to advancing electric mobility.

As part of their deep cooperation covering products and supply chains, the companies will also further develop their digital management and data-sharing capabilities. The aim is to improve compliance with conditions for access to the EU market while strengthening the competitiveness of low-carbon and environmentally friendly products.

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited emphasised that it will remain open to cooperation with international partners in the future and intends to contribute to the global green transition and the creation of a more sustainable automotive future through the power of technological innovation.
