District Developments Across Debrecen

District development projects are progressing as planned in certain areas of Nagyerdő, Nagyerdőalja and the Old Town. Several road safety interventions have already been completed, while significant road and public space developments are underway or set to begin in the near future. Based on residents’ needs, the investments are improving the liveability of Nagyerdőalja and its surroundings in a comprehensive way. This was outlined during today’s site visit by Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa and city councillor István Bognár.

Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa emphasised that these are not merely plans, but concrete developments, some of which have already been completed, while others are under construction or will be finished within this year. He highlighted that one key element of the programme is improving road safety. As part of this, the junction of Ember Pál Street and Weszprémi Street has been redesigned, where a STOP sign and new road markings now support safer traffic. With a similar aim, a smart pedestrian crossing has been installed at the intersection of Laktanya Street and Hadházi Road. The Deputy Mayor added that large-scale road surface renewals will continue in these districts in the coming period. Kurta Street will also be refurbished, similarly to Zöld Street, where a new phase of previously started developments will be implemented. In addition, a комплекс intervention will take place on Szigligeti Street, as Debreceni Vízmű Zrt. will carry out drinking water pipeline reconstruction works, after which the road surface will be fully renewed across its entire width. Lajos Barcsa also highlighted the importance of Fonatos Street, where resurfacing is currently ongoing. As he noted, this road section provides an important connection for traffic heading towards Árpád Square, making this development particularly significant.

The investments affect not only infrastructure but also community spaces. Comprehensive developments will begin in the area around Árpád Square, pruning works will be carried out on Nyíl Street, while green space renewal will commence in Vecsey–Bruckner Park. In addition, responding to residents’ needs, a dog park will be established on the Kút Street side of Árpád Square. Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa stressed that alongside large-scale investments, it is equally important to implement smaller developments that improve everyday quality of life. As stated, Debrecen will continue to remain open to feedback from residents and incorporate it into development decisions in the future.

City councillor István Bognár emphasised that the basis of these developments largely comes from feedback from local residents. He explained that in recent times numerous requests have been received which are now being realised in the form of concrete investments, and these will continue in the coming years. Among other examples, he highlighted the phased implementation of the refurbishment of Zöld Street, which is being carried out in several stages and will be completed in full next year. He indicated that, through road construction coordinated with public utility developments, the transport infrastructure of the district will be renewed in a comprehensive manner. The councillor also spoke about welfare-oriented developments. The modernisation of the playground on Zöld Street will serve the needs of families with children, while the planned dog park will provide a solution for dog owners in the area. He added that the pruning works to be carried out on Nyíl Street will not only support traffic but also contribute to preserving the condition of nearby residential properties.
