Developments in Újkert in 2026
Comprehensive developments are underway and expected throughout the year in Debrecen’s Újkert district.
In addition to the refurbishment of pavements and stairways, community spaces and green areas will also be renovated to create a safer and more liveable environment for all age groups. Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa and city councillor Sándor Szűcs reviewed the ongoing developments in the northern and central parts of Újkert during a site visit.
Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa stated that this year’s city budget allocates a total of HUF 340 million for the renovation of sidewalks and stairways, a significant portion of which will go to Újkert. He emphasized that the neighborhood is long overdue for these improvements, as previous comprehensive housing estate developments did not always extend to these areas. He noted that the condition of sidewalks and stairs in the vicinity of multi-story apartment buildings has deteriorated over the past decades, making their renovation essential. He explained that the primary goal of the developments is to improve traffic safety, particularly for the elderly and families with young children. He added that Újkert’s extensive green spaces and community areas continue to provide residents with opportunities for recreation and community life, so their ongoing development is also a priority.
He also spoke about the development of the playground behind Cívis Street, where work is currently underway. He explained that, as a first step, the area will be fenced off for safety reasons, and then new playground equipment will be added to create an even more attractive community space for children. He emphasized that city leadership takes the needs of all age groups into account. While playgrounds serve younger children, sidewalk and stairway renovations primarily help ensure the safety of older residents.
The deputy mayor highlighted that these improvements are typically driven by residents’ needs, which are continuously communicated to city officials and local representatives. He emphasized that the city responds to these needs in a timely manner, subject to available budget resources.
During the site visit, city councillor Sándor Szűcs outlined the specific developments being implemented and already completed at various locations. He explained that Újkert is one of Debrecen’s busy and densely populated districts, where the renewal of infrastructure has become particularly important in the surroundings of residential buildings constructed in the 1980s.
Several staircases and sidewalk sections on Görgey Street are being renovated; as part of this year’s program, they will receive new paving and modern railings. He emphasized that these elements had deteriorated over time, making their renovation necessary. He mentioned the stairs at 8 Görgey Street, which have already been completed, as a good example, In addition to replacing the paving, the railings were also replaced, and accessibility improvements were made.
Regarding the connecting pavement section completed on Böszörményi Street, he noted that it was constructed at the request of residents and received such positive feedback that additional sections have also been developed. He emphasised that these smaller-scale improvements significantly enhance everyday mobility.
Sándor Szűcs also spoke about the renewal of the Katalin Nagy Memorial Park, where the rearrangement of vegetation is underway, along with the refurbishment of park facilities. He added that a playground swing will be installed in the near future, further strengthening the park’s role as a community space.
