Library Community Terrace and Water Tower Refurbishment Coming to Fényes Udvar District
The Petőfi Memorial Library on Víztorony Street is to be expanded with a community terrace, as announced by Mayor László Papp on his Facebook page. The mayor added that the terrace will provide an opportunity for residents of the Fényes Udvar district to meet, and—alongside reading—to hold community programmes.
The building underwent an energy-efficiency modernisation in autumn 2024 and spring 2025; sanitary facilities were renewed and a new reception area was also created so that reading becomes an enjoyable experience for everyone. The upgrade was carried out at a cost of more than HUF 35 million, and now a terrace will also be added.
In his video, László Papp also spoke about plans to refurbish the district’s iconic water tower, in the coming years, with the planning phase set to begin shortly.
The 61-year-old structure serves to equalise pressure in the water supply system. It is said of the 44.6-metre giant that it could only be commissioned after a rather eventful start-up. The contractors of the 3,000-cubic-metre reinforced-concrete structure, built using slip-form technology, deviated from the method prescribed by the designers. As a result—and due to loads and torsion—the outer structure of the pillars cracked and began to leak. The problem was resolved by the end of 1963.
When the Fényes Udvar water tower was brought into operation, the one in the Great Forest was handed over to the then medical university, and it has served the clinics’ water supply ever since.
