Renewable Energy Plays an Increasingly Significant Role in Debrecen
The city aims not only to develop its economy but also to take decisive steps towards carbon neutrality. This was also discussed at a two-day event focusing on the most important issues of energy supply.
Today, Hungary is a global leader in per capita solar energy production. Over the past ten years, the country has increased its solar power capacity eightfold, and around 320,000 households now have solar panel systems. The use of renewable energy has gained greater importance – among other things, this was highlighted by Csaba Gondola at EnergoExpo. The State Secretary responsible for the circular economy and climate policy emphasised that one of the key elements of the green transition is whether we are able to store the energy produced. “We have allocated an extremely large amount of funding to the home energy storage programme so that households can also take advantage of this opportunity. Industrial storage capacity is now also available in Hungary, and we are striving to support this with as much funding as possible,” he stressed.
The use of renewable energy is also becoming increasingly important in Debrecen. Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa said that Debrecen has become a city where conscious, strategic thinking underpins economic growth and industrial development, with energy as a key element. The city’s aim is to take decisive steps towards carbon neutrality alongside economic development. “The role of electric energy is increasing, the share of renewables is rising, and energy storage has become ever more important. This is not a trend; it is a systemic transformation, and in this Hungary and Debrecen are not lagging behind but are active participants,” he explained.
It was also stated at EnergoExpo that Hungary has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 50 per cent compared to 1990, and by 2030 the country’s share of global emissions could fall below one tenth of one per cent.
