Construction of Szoboszlói Road Junction Enters Final Stretch
The reconstruction of the Szoboszlói Road junction in Debrecen is nearing completion: the main road construction works have already been finished, and the impact of the development is becoming increasingly noticeable. Thanks to the investment, traffic conditions are improving, congestion is decreasing, and crossing the junction will become faster and safer. In the final phase of construction, work is currently under way on cycle paths, pavements and safety barriers – as reported at the press conference held on 31 March, attended by József Pántya, Deputy State Secretary responsible for road and railway construction at the Ministry of Construction and Transport, Diána Széles, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen and parliamentary candidate for Constituency No. 2 of Hajdú-Bihar County, and László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen.
As part of the project a new lane has been constructed on Main Road No. 4 (Szoboszlói Road) over a stretch of approximately 200 metres before the signalised junction, while on the section in front of Szoboszlói Road Primary School the merging lane has been extended by a further 60 metres.
Several important changes have also been made on the Külsővásártér branch of the junction: a new right-turn lane has been constructed along a 130-metre section between Arany János Street and Széchenyi Street. On the approximately 150-metre stretch of Külsővásártér from Miklós Street to Arany János Street, a dedicated bus lane has been created in place of the former bay, facilitating smoother bus access to the coach station. A new bus bay has been constructed outside this lane, designed to accommodate multiple buses simultaneously. Within the coach station, a track curve has also been adjusted to make turning easier for buses.
To implement changes to the traffic order, the section between Külsővásártér and the service roads connecting to Arany János Street has been made one-way towards Piac Street. The traffic arrangement on the connecting section of Postakert Street has also been modified: the previously two-way traffic has been changed to one-way from Külsővásártér towards Zelemér Street. A cycle connection has been built from Postakert Street towards Külsővásártér.
On Szoboszlói Road, from Keleti Row to the junction, the road has been widened by an additional lane, allowing traffic heading towards Hajdúszoboszló on Main Road No. 4 to leave the city centre using two lanes.
As part of the development, street lighting columns have been relocated and new ones installed. In addition, significant utility diversions – accounting for a quarter of the total investment cost – including large-diameter gas, drinking water and sewage pipelines, have been completed.
The aim of the project is to increase the junction’s traffic capacity and throughput, thereby ensuring more comfortable, congestion-free and safer travel along this busy section of road. Furthermore, by introducing a dedicated bus lane, the development enables long-distance buses to access the coach station more quickly, allowing public transport users to reach their destinations sooner.
The project is being implemented as an investment of the Ministry of Construction and Transport, with construction carried out by HE-DO Építő Zrt., funded from domestic sources at a gross cost of HUF 2.4 billion. The full project is expected to be completed in June 2026.
