Debrecen-manufactured BMW Is Car of the Year
The BMW iX3 has won the 2026 World Car of the Year award, as announced at the New York International Auto Show. This is one of the most prestigious global automotive accolades, awarded by an international panel of experts.
The international jury of 98 automotive journalists (from 33 countries) honoured the BMW iX3 with not just one, but two awards. As the first model of the Neue Klasse, in addition to winning the 2026 World Car of the Year title—outperforming competitors across all powertrain categories—the iX3 also received the 2026 World Electric Vehicle of the Year award.
The BMW iX3—whose series production began last September in Debrecen—introduced what the jury described as groundbreaking technological innovations, such as the BMW Panoramic iDrive display interface and the “Heart of Joy” central computing system. One of the vehicle’s greatest strengths is the combination of range and charging performance. The model offers a range of up to 800 kilometres while featuring ultra-fast charging capabilities. Design also played a key role in its success: the iX3’s appearance is modern, clean and futuristic, while retaining BMW’s distinctive styling cues, the jury noted.
“We are very pleased with this fantastic recognition received by the BMW iX3 as the first representative of the Neue Klasse. The BMW iX3 marks the beginning of a new era for BMW—in terms of design language, range, charging capacity, as well as driver assistance systems and the BMW Panoramic iDrive,” said Mike Reichelt.
With these two new awards, BMW Group has now won a total of 11 titles in the history of the World Car Awards, and another accolade may follow, as Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW Group, has been nominated for the 2026 World Car Person of the Year award, to be announced at a later date.
