HUF 1.5 Billion Upgrade in Debrecen: New Building for the Assisted Reproduction Centre

The University of Debrecen’s Assisted Reproduction Centre is planned to be expanded with a new modern building. Today, infertility affects one in six women, meaning the reproductive centre could offer hope to thousands of couples wishing to have children.

“With the new building, we will be able to achieve significant progress not only in terms of capacity but also quality. This primarily involves the modernisation of the embryology laboratory’s background, as well as its building engineering and hospital technology conditions,” said Zoltán Tándor, Director of the Assisted Reproduction Centre at the University of Debrecen’s Clinical Centre.

The development is being financed by the University of Debrecen from its own funds at a cost of more than HUF 1.5 billion. “We have made a decision that can ensure outstanding care not only regionally and nationally, but even at a European level in the long term,” emphasised György Kossa, Chairman of Gróf Tisza István Foundation for the University of Debrecen.

The new centre will be located on the grounds of the Clinical Centre. The three-storey building will include changing rooms and storage facilities in the basement, while treatment rooms will be established on the upper floors.

“Permit and construction plans have been completed, and the public procurement procedure for construction has been launched and is currently ongoing. So far, ten construction companies have expressed interest, and we expect that as many as twenty or more firms may bid for the project,” said Zoltán Bács, Chancellor of the University of Debrecen.

The centre is expected to carry out around 1,500 procedures annually. “For Hungary, it is a key issue that as many children as possible are born. Couples who are willing to start a family must be supported by every possible means,” stressed Diána Széles, Deputy Mayor.

According to plans, the new building of the Assisted Reproduction Centre is expected to be completed by 2027.
