Students in Debrecen “Saved Lives” by Stopping “Bleeding” and Practicing CPR
Young people who took part in the regional round of the Hungarian Red Cross National First Aid Competition on 23 April 2026 “resuscitated” when needed or even stopped “severe bleeding”. According to the organisers, it is extremely important for students to acquire the basics of proper first aid so that they can confidently help those in trouble when necessary.
At the first station of the competition, students had to treat three “casualties” at the same time, requiring quick and coordinated teamwork among the five-member teams. According to the pupils, first aid is a particularly important skill. “We don’t know when we might find ourselves in a situation where we need to help someone—not just a stranger, but even a friend or family member,” said Gemma Kóté.
Competitors had to cope with realistic accident scenarios: they treated “nosebleeds”, “loss of consciousness”, or even minor “injuries”, all while maintaining focus throughout. Several age groups were represented in the competition: children, secondary school students, and adults alike. “The earlier young people begin engaging with this subject, the broader the knowledge they can gain. Among them may be the outstanding first aid providers of the future,” emphasised Krisztina Tisza Wágnerné, county director of the Hungarian Red Cross.
Twenty teams demonstrated their skills in the regional round of the National First Aid Competition. The aim of the programme is for young people to learn the fundamentals of proper assistance and to have the confidence to help others. “We want Debrecen to be a community where, in times of trouble, there are always people willing to help, not just bystanders. For this, we need young people who dare to help with solid knowledge and courage,” said Deputy Mayor Diána Széles.
The best teams will also be able to showcase their skills in the county round, and those who perform well there will advance to the national final. As Diána Széles noted in her opening remarks at the current event, the final will be held in Debrecen in the autumn, where more than 300 young people are expected to attend.
