Flower Distribution Returns to Debrecen – 2026
In keeping with a long-standing tradition, Debrecen’s city councillors will once again distribute annual flower and balcony plant seedlings to residents living in their respective constituencies in 2026.
The municipality launched the flower distribution initiative in 1998 at the suggestion of the Fidesz group, with the aim of making Debrecen more beautiful and colourful together with the city’s residents. Since then, the tradition has only been interrupted once, in 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic. At that time, the flowers intended for distribution were planted in public spaces across the city, including a floral display spelling out “Thank You, Debrecen.”
This year, around 125,000 annual and balcony plants will be distributed, with the programme beginning on Wednesday, 20 May, and expected to continue until the first days of June.
Residents are advised to follow updates regularly, as the distributions are held outdoors and may be affected by weather conditions, which could result in changes to the schedule. In addition to the municipality’s official website, it is also worth monitoring announcements made by individual councillors on social media. Residents attending a distribution are asked to bring proof of address with them, as councillors are only able to provide flowers to people living within their own constituency.
