Flower Distribution Begins in Debrecen
In keeping with a tradition spanning several decades, Debrecen’s city councillors are once again distributing annual flower and balcony plant seedlings in 2026 to residents living in their respective constituencies. The distribution began on 20 May 2026 and is expected to continue until the first days of June.
At one of the first locations, the Nagysándor housing estate, City Councillor and Deputy Mayor Diána Széles explained that annual flowers have been distributed every year by individual councillors with the support of the municipality since 1998, when the Fidesz group launched the initiative in the city assembly. The aim is to encourage residents to care for and beautify the front gardens of their homes as well as public spaces, making them more attractive and colourful. Each councillor distributes flowers within their own constituency, and experience shows that many residents return to these events year after year because they receive beautiful flowers with which they gladly enhance their surroundings. Residents often provide feedback and report on the results, thereby contributing to making the city more beautiful. According to Diána Széles, the distributed flowers are clearly visible throughout the city. This is precisely the objective, as Debrecen is the shared garden of its residents – something every citizen of Debrecen should feel and actively contribute to in order to make this common garden increasingly beautiful.
Diána Széles also noted that a total of 125,000 annual flower and balcony plant seedlings are being distributed this year. The horticultural experts selecting the plants also take into account which types of seedlings are best suited to different residential areas, since certain plants thrive better in detached housing districts while others are more suitable for housing estates. It is important that residents bring their address cards with them to the distribution sites, as councillors can provide flowers only to residents belonging to their own constituency.
Flower distributions are taking place at specified dates and locations according to city district and councillor constituency. This information is available on the municipality’s website in the News section under the article titled Flower Distribution Returns to Debrecen – 2026.
Interested residents are advised to monitor the continuously updated information regularly, as the flower distributions are held outdoors and current weather conditions may affect the schedule, potentially resulting in changes to the announced times. In addition to the municipal website, it is also worth following announcements made by individual municipal councillors on social media.
