Injured Worker Stabilised and Exams Relocated After Electrical Explosion at UD Chemistry Building
On 8 June, an electrical explosion occurred in the Chemistry Building of the University of Debrecen during planned refurbishment works in the afternoon. The cables inside an electrical cabinet were burned, and the resulting smoke triggered the building’s fire alarms. Those on the affected floor evacuated the building with the assistance of the university’s security service.
Firefighters arriving at the scene ventilated and inspected the area, and no further intervention was required, as the electrical fire had already extinguished itself before their arrival, the University of Debrecen’s press office said.
They stated that a contractor’s employee suffered burn injuries in the accident and was transported by ambulance to the Burn Centre of the DE Clinical Centre with severe second- and third-degree burns affecting 40 per cent of his body. The patient’s condition is stable, and he is receiving continuous treatment under strict specialist supervision.
Fault investigation and technical repair work are currently under way, and exams scheduled to take place in the building have been relocated to other buildings on the University Square campus. Restoration work is expected to be completed later this week.
