Hungary National Team’s Arrival Boosts Not Only Football Fans but Also Tourism in Debrecen
The arrival of the Hungarian national football team generated excitement not only among football supporters but also within Debrecen’s tourism sector. Hotels filled up ahead of the friendly match against Kazakhstan on 9 June, with many visitors choosing to spend several days in the city. According to tourism professionals, an international sporting event of this kind not only increases the number of guest nights but also enhances Debrecen’s reputation worldwide.
The Hungary men’s national football team had last played in Debrecen in June 2024, so it came as no surprise that there was enormous interest even in the team’s public training session. More than 5,000 supporters attended Monday’s training, and former national team captain Balázs Dzsudzsák watched from the touchline as head coach Marco Rossi put the players through their paces.
Every touch of the ball by Dominik Szoboszlai was greeted with cheers, while the post-training autograph session attracted attention more commonly associated with rock stars.
Tuesday’s friendly match against Kazakhstan, with Hungary winning by 3–1, had an impact on the entire city. “Our outlook for the rest of the week is also favourable, and we expect to be fully booked at the weekend. This is mainly thanks to individual tourists, so we are certainly looking ahead to a positive period, and bookings for next week are encouraging as well,” pointed out József Márics, Director of Hotel Divinus Superior.
An event of this nature not only increases the number of overnight stays but also makes a significant contribution to the city’s image, according to Enikő Tóth-Megyesi, Director of VisitDebrecen. “An event like this carries considerable media value, as attention is focused on Debrecen from many parts of the world. It provides an excellent opportunity for the city to present itself even more prominently on the international stage,” she emphasised.
Large international events are among the most effective ways of building a city’s brand, which is why the 3×3 Basketball Championship to be held in Debrecen later this summer is also of particular importance.
