Track Renovation Works to Cause Major Disruption in Debrecen’s Tram Services

To ensure the safe and reliable operation of the tram network, DKV Zrt. will undertake track renovation works in several phases between 15 June and 20 July 2026.

The company will replace rails at three locations, covering a total of 228 track metres, before and after the tram stop at Kossuth Square and in front of No. 23 Péterfia Street. At Kossuth Square, the existing cracked asphalt surface between the rail replacement sections will be replaced with coloured concrete paving. In addition, track alignment works will be carried out at five locations on Bem Square and Simonyi Road, covering a total of 144 track metres.

Phase one: evening and overnight works

The first phase of the project will take place from 15 June until approximately 20 June. During this period, works on Bem Square and Simonyi Road will be carried out after 6 p.m. and overnight following the end of tram operations, while maintaining tram services. No work will be undertaken during the daytime, meaning trams will operate normally from the start of service each morning. DKV has warned that the overnight works may generate noise and has asked for the patience and understanding of residents in the affected areas.

Tram services suspended at Kossuth Square for two weeks

From 22 June to 7 July, contractors will work at Kossuth Square. The timing of the project has been scheduled to coincide with the period between the end of the academic year and the start of Campus Festival. During this period, Tram Routes 1 and 2 will not carry passengers between Nagyállomás (Main Railway Station) and Kálvin Square. As a result, journeys across the full route will require a transfer. Replacement bus services designated 1V-2V will operate from Nagyállomás to Kálvin Square, where passengers can transfer to Route 1 trams heading towards the University or Route 2 trams travelling towards Doberdó Street.

Route of the 1V-2V replacement bus services:

Nagyállomás – Petőfi Square – Piac Street – Széchenyi Street – Tisza István Street – Hatvan Street – Bethlen Street – Hunyadi János Street – Rákóczi Street – Burgundia Street – Kossuth Street – Piac Street – Petőfi Square – Nagyállomás.

The buses will serve the following stops: Nagyállomás (Stop 10 bus boarding point), Petőfi Square, Piac Street, Debrecen Court, Hatvan Street, Kölcsey Centre (Bethlen Street), Kölcsey Centre (Hunyadi János Street), Kálvin Square, Burgundia Street, Csokonai Theatre, Kistemplom, before returning to Petőfi Square and Nagyállomás.

Route 1 tram services to be fully suspended in early July

From 8 to 12 July, work at Kossuth Square will continue while rail replacement works begin in Péterfia Street. During this period, Route 1 tram services will be suspended along the entire line and passengers will be transported by 1V replacement buses. Route 2 trams will continue to operate between Kálvin Square and Doberdó Street, while the connection between Nagyállomás and Kálvin Square will be provided by the 1V replacement bus service.

Route of the 1V replacement bus service:

Nagyállomás – Petőfi Square – Piac Street – Kossuth Street – Burgundia Street – Rákóczi Street – Péterfia Street – Bem Square – Simonyi Road – Pallagi Road – Ady Endre Road – Nagyerdei Boulevard – Simonyi Road – Bem Square – Péterfia Street – Rákóczi Street – Burgundia Street – Kossuth Street – Piac Street – Petőfi Square – Nagyállomás.

The buses will stop at Nagyállomás (Stop 10 bus boarding point), Petőfi Square, Piac Street, Csokonai Theatre, Burgundia Street, Rákóczi Street, the temporary Kálvin Square stop, Eötvös Street, Bem Square, Weszprémi Street, Nagyerdei Boulevard, Aquaticum, Clinical Centre Nagyerdei Campus, University, Medgyessy Promenade and Andaházi Street. On the return journey, they will again serve Bem Square, Honvéd Street, Kálvin Square, Burgundia Street, Csokonai Theatre, Kistemplom, Petőfi Square and Nagyállomás.

DKV stated that single tickets cover the transfer between services must be validated separately on each vehicle.

Motorists should also expect changes

Road traffic restrictions will also be introduced around the work sites in Péterfia Street, Bem Square and Simonyi Road. During the works, speed limits will be imposed and lane narrowing at several locations may cause delays for motorists.
