No Entry for Cars, Plenty of Room for Dancing: Downtown Debrecen to Come Alive During the Summer Holidays

From 18 June, people will be able to enjoy a variety of cultural programmes in the city centre twice a week – on Thursdays and Saturdays. Organised through the cooperation of Cívis Ház, Főnix Rendezvényszervező and the municipality, the events aim to create a new community space in the heart of Debrecen.

“Belváros-Szeretem (Downtown – Love It) is different from all other events because it is essentially a brand, an identity, a way of life, an expression of city-centre living and the cooperation of a community,” said Edit Erdei, Chief Executive Officer of Cívis Ház Zrt.

Concerts and dance performances will take place at the corner of Rózsa Street and Piac Street, as well as outside No. 32 Piac Street. Local businesses are also preparing for the events and will welcome participants with a range of special offers and discounts.

Főnix Rendezvényszervező joined the initiative two years ago. This year, visitors will be able to meet 28 performers from Debrecen or with ties to the city. Information on performers and schedules will also be available through the Debrecen Programmes mobile application. “When visitors see a dance group performing that will also take part in the Flower Carnival and parade through the city of Debrecen, we can give them a glimpse of just how colourful our city is and how many talented people live among us,” pointed out Zita Dobos, Managing Director of Főnix Rendezvényszervező.

The city is also working to make cultural life as vibrant as possible during the summer holidays. According to Mayor László Papp, residents and visitors will be able to choose from around 1,200 events over the coming weeks. He added that, once the tram track reconstruction works have been completed, Piac Street will become car-free at weekends between Kossuth–Széchenyi Street and Arany János Street. “This means that from Friday evening until Sunday evening, the area will function as an event venue. It will become a car-free zone, and pedestrians, people looking to enjoy themselves, and café terraces will be able to take over this section of the street that is currently used by cars,” he emphasised.

In preparation for this period, the city has also sought to improve the appearance of this section of the main street by planting 9,000 individual plants.
