Tram Rail Replacement Begins on Debrecen’s Main Square

Replacement buses will run between the Main Railway Station and Kálvin Square over the coming weeks. Near the stop at Kossuth Square, construction machinery has already begun breaking up the road surface. Between 22 June and 7 July, rail replacement works will be carried out on this section, followed by work on Péterfia Street between 8 and 12 July, covering 228 linear metres of track.

A tram weighs 30 tonnes, and during peak hours when full of passengers it can weigh up to 65 tonnes. On this section, a vehicle passes on average every four minutes, with the last full renovation of this stretch carried out 25 years ago, during the reconstruction of Kossuth Square. “Since 2014, when tram line 2 and the number 2 tram service were launched, the system has been under double the load. In some sections, the track structure was reinforced by welding, extending its lifespan by 5–6 years, but it is now clearly due for replacement,” highlighted Péter Kerekes, Technical Director of DKV Zrt.

The first phase of the tram track renovation began already in the middle of the month. Last week, specialists carried out track adjustment works during the evening hours. Rail replacement works and the phased closure of the tram line did not begin by coincidence on the first day of the summer school holidays. “The school term has ended, and during this period passenger traffic generated by trams is lower than during term time. This also makes it manageable for the replacement bus services,” said Péter Károlyi, Head of Communications at DKV.

Over the coming weeks, passengers who wish to reach the Clinical Centre without changing transport should avoid the replacement buses at Nagyállomás and instead board bus 10 or 10Y.
