Debrecen Joins Nationwide Kitchen Garden Competition
Debrecen has once again joined the nationwide programme Most Beautiful Kitchen Gardens, which focuses on environmentally conscious and natural gardening practices this year. Owners of private, rented, balcony and community gardens across the city were all eligible to enter the competition.
Debrecen’s community gardens have already received national recognition in recent years. The Vénkert Community Garden was established in 2020 as the city’s first initiative of its kind and has since grown into a community of 100 to 150 members. The first community garden in Tócóskert was established in 2022 and, following its success, work is already under way to create another. Both housing estates have previously been awarded the title of Hungary’s Most Beautiful Kitchen Garden.
In this year’s competition, the judging panel will also assess which biological products gardeners use to protect against pests, as well as how they improve soil health and crop quality using natural methods. “Low-chemical gardening is a fundamental principle for us, so meeting this year’s judging criteria did not present any challenge. As part of the municipal tree-planting programme, we have also taken responsibility for caring for six fruit trees, in addition to those already growing in our garden. We treat them exclusively with gentle natural methods, such as sulphur-based dormant spraying, and we always use products that are environmentally friendly,” emphasised Mária Nagy-Bujdosó, Head of the Tócóskert Community Garden.
