Free Event Series “Downtown – Love It” Continues in Debrecen

The free event series Downtown – Love It (Belváros – Szeretem!) will continue in Debrecen from 17 July until 30 August with a variety of activities at new venues. The series will enrich the city’s cultural life along Piac Street, from the Kossuth and Széchenyi Streets to Arany János Street.

Organised jointly by Cívis Ház and Főnix Rendezvényszervező, Downtown – Love It has brought free cultural events to various locations across Debrecen’s city centre for several years. Running until the end of the summer, this year’s programme is the result of broad institutional cooperation and builds on the city’s vibrant summer atmosphere with new venues, new partners and new community experiences. Its primary aim is to strengthen Debrecen’s city centre as a lively, welcoming hub for culture and community life. The programme is also expected to increase footfall for shops, service providers and hospitality businesses on Piac Street while giving a further boost to the city’s tourism sector.

The upcoming event has been organised through the cooperation of the Municipality of Debrecen, municipal institutions, municipal companies, cultural organisations, hospitality businesses and retailers. All activities are free to attend.

From 17 July until 30 August 2026, the sections of Piac Street between Széchenyi Street and Arany János Street, and between Kossuth Street and Szent Anna Street, will be closed to motor traffic every weekend from 6:00 p.m. on Friday until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. Hospitality venues along these sections of Piac Street will expand their outdoor terraces and offer a wide range of entertainment for visitors. During the road closures, the programme will include shop window exhibitions, children’s activities, concerts and guided walks, adding to the city centre’s cultural attractions. Throughout these weekend periods, pedestrians will be able to use the carriageway.

Downtown – Love It offers a wide variety of events through to the end of the summer:

  • As part of the DayTime Party programme, hospitality venues including Tabu Debrecen and Pince Café & Music Club will host outdoor music events with DJs on Fridays and/or Saturdays between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
  • At the Debrecen Bicycle Museum (30 Piac Street), curator Attila Katona will lead free themed guided tours every Saturday and Sunday from 5:00 p.m., presenting the history of the bicycle from 1817 to the present day. Free bicycle parking will also be available in the courtyard.
  • An additional venue will join the Debrecen Street Music Days programme on 17 July, with performances outside Beugroom and Annuska, organised by DEMKI.
  • On 18 July, visitors can enjoy an acoustic concert by Bíró-Káposztás Akusztik and the dance performance “Getting Ready for the Carnival!”, organised by Főnix.
  • From 18 July, MODEM will present “In Their Footsteps,” a street photography exhibition by Levente Vigh at 26 Piac Street.
  • In August, the display window at 26 Piac Street will feature “Zoo Portraits,” a photography exhibition by Roland Eszenyi organised by Zoo Debrecen.
  • On 29 August, historian and museum curator Katalin Váradi of the Déri Museum will lead a city centre walking tour entitled “Secrets of the Centuries Through the Buildings, Streets and Squares of Debrecen”, starting from the Rickl House. Staff from the Déri Museum will also host an information stand outside 39 Piac Street on 8 August.
  • Agóra will offer interactive, hands-on activities, while the Csokonai National Theatre will present a traditional fairground puppet show and a musical journey through time. The Vojtina Puppet Theatre will perform a musical production, and Kodály Philharmonic Debrecen will give a concert featuring the Aranyhúr Orchestra.
  • Mini Flower Courtyard, on 15 August, will offer a children’s band, interactive and educational activities, and flower-themed craft workshops, primarily for families.
  • A Vintage and Y2K Market, organised by UG Store, will take place on 22 August at 34–36 Piac Street.

The full programme is available on the initiative’s Facebook page and on the social media channels of the participating partners.
