Stage 1 Water Restrictions Declared in Debrecen

At the recommendation of Debreceni Vízmű Kft, the Municipality of Debrecen has declared Stage 1 water restrictions across the city with immediate effect and until further notice. In connection with these restrictions, the municipality is asking all residents of Debrecen for their cooperation.

Taking into account the latest forecast data from the Hungarian Meteorological Service (HungaroMet), the National Chief Medical Officer has issued a Level 3 heat alert covering the entire country until midnight on Tuesday, 4 August 2026. In light of the weather forecast, the alert is expected to be extended.

Given the current meteorological conditions, which are expected to persist, both domestic and non-domestic water users are asked to use water responsibly and in an environmentally conscious manner. During prolonged periods of extreme heat and drought, it is particularly important to remember that the primary purpose of drinking water is to meet essential human needs, including drinking, personal hygiene and cooking.

To ensure that the drinking water supply remains continuous and uninterrupted in the coming period, and that mains water remains available to everyone without restriction, careful and responsible water use is essential.

The Municipality of Debrecen has a water restriction plan that provides for different levels of restrictions depending on weather conditions and water demand. On the recommendation of Debreceni Vízmű Kft., the Municipality of Debrecen has therefore declared Stage 1 water restrictions with immediate effect and until further notice, and requests the cooperation of all residents in complying with the following measures.

The following activities are prohibited:

  • Watering green spaces and public areas with drinking water using hoses or sprinkler systems.
  • Filling swimming pools.
  • Cleaning or cooling concrete, asphalt and decorative stone surfaces with drinking water.
  • Washing vehicles.
  • Operating fountains and ornamental water features.
  • Routine water replacement in the pools of public and private beaches, swimming facilities and wellness hotels, unless rescheduled to a period agreed with the water utility provider.

Users are asked to suspend or postpone these activities, as they place a significant burden on the water supply system. In extreme circumstances, such demand could jeopardise the reliable provision of water for essential everyday use.

Depending on future weather conditions and the duration of the exceptional situation, the current restrictions may be amended or, if necessary, strengthened through additional measures.

Drinking water is not only a natural resource but also a shared responsibility. By making thoughtful, environmentally responsible decisions about our water use, we can all help ensure that this essential resource remains available even during periods of extreme weather.
