Debrecen Sports School Holds Season Opening Event

Ways to encourage young people to take up sport in today’s digital world and changes in youth development were among the issues addressed at the Debrecen Sports School’s (DSI) new-season opening event, where communication between generations was also a key topic.

In spring, 130 nursery-school children took part in DSI’s football festival for young children. The event is held every year with the aim of getting the youngest children to enjoy physical activity and providing opportunities to compete for those who are talented and interested in sport.

According to experts, reaching and retaining children is becoming an increasingly difficult challenge in today’s digital world. “Somehow, we need to structure both the training sessions and the professional content in a way that makes children enjoy being active, rather than spending their free time in front of their phones. We want them to come here, do sport with us and feel part of a community. I think this will be a rewarding challenge for everyone in the near future,” said Tamás Pinczés, Operational Director of DSI Debrecen.

At DSI Debrecen’s season opening event, effective communication between generations was also discussed alongside the development of new generations. According to the experts, the organisation’s responsibilities have expanded significantly in recent years, so its activities are now organised around five main areas: competitive sport, recreational sport, multisport, sports science and healthcare, and equal opportunities. “DSI Debrecen is now much more than the network of sports departments we started out with, as there are now numerous other programmes. I’m thinking, for example, of the city’s swimming lessons, the coordination of the ‘Get Moving, Debrecen!’ programme, and various programmes and events for children living with disabilities. So DSI Debrecen now has a great many areas that it needs to deal with,” said András Becsky, Managing Director.

In the new academic year, DSI Debrecen will offer sporting opportunities across 15 sports departments, while its wide range of programmes will reach around 4,000 participants every month.
