Road Construction Continues on Fekete István Street in Pallag
The details of the investment under way in Debrecen-Pallag were presented at a press conference at the site by Mayor László Papp and Róbert Juráskó, city councillor for the area, on 7 September 2026.
As László Papp explained, the city has made progress in a number of areas this year in terms of utility infrastructure and road construction. As soon as weather conditions allowed in the spring, work got under way, and in recent months the city has successfully completed and opened three major renovated road junctions, most recently – before the start of the school year – the junction of Vámospércsi Road, Hétvezér Street and Budai Nagy Antal Street. According to the Mayor, all three junctions performed well at the start of the school year, operating with adequate traffic capacity. This also demonstrates that such interventions are worthwhile. Among the major transport projects, construction is currently under way on the road linking Domokos Márton Road with Main Road 354, which will provide a new transport corridor between Füredi Road, Balmazújvárosi Road and the northern bypass. The fifth project in the series will be the reconstruction of the junction of Árpád Square, Ótemető Street and Rakovszky Street. In this case, the public procurement procedure has been completed, and the city hopes that the new government will provide the necessary funding for the reconstruction of this junction as well. There is a pressing need to reduce the traffic load on Rakovszky Street in order to increase its capacity.
In addition to the larger projects, László Papp also mentioned smaller-scale road construction works, such as the investment on Fekete István Street in Pallag, where construction began today with utility substructure works. A new municipally maintained road is being built here over a length of 420 metres, on the section between Makszin Mihály Street and Bocz Ernő Street. Until now, the lack of a paved road had caused significant dust pollution in the area, but thanks to the investment this will cease within a few months. It is hoped that the contractor will complete the work before the onset of winter. The current investment on Fekete István Street, with a gross value of HUF 88.955 million, is being implemented with funding from the HUF 400 million grant awarded under the second phase of the Competitive Districts Programme. The provision of a permanent road surface on Bíbor Street is also being carried out under this programme.
Two phases of road construction have already been completed on Fekete István Street: the first phase was carried out in summer 2024 over a 240-metre section, while the second phase was completed in summer 2026, meaning that the current work is the third phase. The public procurement procedure resulted in very favourable construction prices, generating savings within the budget allocated for the development of Fekete István Street. If a further funding application is successful, the city will therefore be able to conduct the public procurement procedure for paving the fourth section of Fekete István Street in spring 2027. It is hoped that this will mean the entire length of Fekete István Street will have an asphalt surface by next summer. As the road runs straight and parallel to Mezőgazdász Street, the design also had to take traffic-calming requirements into account. Raised road humps will therefore be installed at the junctions, forcing motorists to slow down as they approach them.
According to Róbert Juráskó, city councillor for the area, it is very important that investments in Pallag serve the people who live there. A public forum was previously held to assess residents’ needs, and the outcome showed that creating good transport conditions was the top priority for local people. In line with this, numerous developments have been implemented in recent years and this year as well. The condition of Fekete István Street is particularly important, as it is a collector road. With the current investment, three-quarters of the street will have an asphalt surface, and Róbert Juráskó also hopes that the paving of the entire street can be completed next year. This would provide very good transport conditions for the Barackvirág residential park, where road construction has already begun on the private roads as well. Alongside the road construction, the councillor also mentioned other developments implemented in Pallag, including the construction of a playground and pavements. Among the plans, he highlighted the creation of a pedestrian crossing on Mezőgazdász Street, which will further improve opportunities for safe travel.
