Debrecen Hopes for Development Funding in Next EU Funding Cycle

The European Committee of the Regions’ Commission for Territorial Cohesion Policy and EU Budget held an off-site meeting and conference in Cáceres, Spain. Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa also attended the two-day meeting, which concluded on Friday. Speaking to Médiacentrum Debrecen afterwards, he said he was confident that the city of Debrecen would also be able to secure substantial development funding during the EU funding period between 2028 and 2034.

The next seven-year EU funding cycle, beginning in 2028, was a key topic at the commission’s meeting. In this context, senior representatives of cities, counties and regions expressed their commitment to further reducing disparities in levels of development between different parts of Europe through cohesion funding. Hungary and Debrecen have so far received substantial support for this purpose. “There was previously a direction within the EU suggesting that there would be significantly less cohesion funding available in the period ahead. There is clearly agreement within the Committee of the Regions that this must not be allowed to happen, because the development of cities and regions is crucial and is one of the European Union’s core values. I am confident that Debrecen will also be able to secure substantial development funding in the 2028–34 EU funding cycle,” said Lajos Barcsa.

The participants in the commission’s forum also called for greater development of regional cooperation. They further expressed the view that, based on the right to remain in one’s local community, towns and cities should continue to be developed in a number of areas with the help of EU funding in order to improve quality of life.
