Feasibility Study Commissioned for Development of Debrecen’s Main Railway Station
Last week, Zsolt Tárkányi, Debrecen MP and Parliamentary State Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Investment, announced that the ministry had commissioned a feasibility study for the development of a new Main Railway Station in Debrecen. On Monday, Minister for Transport and Investment Dávid Vitézy also wrote in greater detail about the project on his Facebook page, describing it as the first step towards the redevelopment of the station.
He highlighted that the study will not simply examine the renovation of the station building but will look at the complete redevelopment of the Main Railway Station and its surroundings based on passengers’ needs. “We will examine how to create a truly modern transport hub where rail, tram and bus services, as well as P+R and B+R facilities, form an integrated system; how a future tram-train service, the airport and the city’s new economic zones could potentially be connected to it; what community, retail and service functions are needed at the station; and how the entire area can be developed so that it fits organically into Debrecen’s future urban structure.”
The minister emphasised that the feasibility study is the first step in a lengthy process as, once it is complete, the design phase can begin. Following completion of the final plans, a public procurement procedure can be launched for the implementation of the project, after which construction can begin.
In response to Dehir’s inquiry, the ministry wrote that the contractor commissioned to prepare the feasibility study is Trenecon Tanácsadó és Tervező Kft. under a framework agreement concluded previously, at a net contract value of HUF 40 million. The study is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
The study will determine the proposed development of the Main Railway Station and related transport investments, as well as the additional design work required for them. On this basis, architectural design competitions and public procurement procedures for the selection of designers can then be launched, the ministry concluded in its response.
