Renovation of Main Road 33 Continues in Debrecen with Further Traffic Restrictions
Renovation of Füredi Road has reached another stage, with contractors now laying asphalt on the southern side. Several connecting roads will remain closed until Thursday due to the works, after which the upgrade will continue on the northern side. The renovation of this approximately 2.5-kilometre section is costing HUF 1.3 billion and is scheduled for completion by the end of November.
Work to renovate Füredi Road between Nádor Street and Böszörményi Road began three weeks ago, with traffic restricted to one lane in each direction. From Wednesday, contractors are carrying out asphalting work on the southern side and cross traffic is suspended until Thursday, meaning vehicles will be unable to enter or leave Miklós Sinai Street, and the southern road connections linked to this section will also be inaccessible. Once this side is complete, work will move to the other side of the road.
“We expect to switch the traffic management arrangements by the middle of next week. This means the contractor will designate the two northern lanes of Füredi Road as a work area. Kerb installation and removal, milling, level adjustments and the renovation of stormwater drainage chambers will then begin,” explained Zsombor Gábor, Head of City Operations.
This is one of Debrecen’s busiest roads, carrying tens of thousands of vehicles every day. Residents have raised concerns about its deteriorating condition with both the local authority and Magyar Közút, the company responsible for maintaining the road. Funded by the state at a cost of HUF 1.3 billion, the upgrade is being carried out in stages. Drivers have already been able to use the sections between Csigekert and Böszörményi Road, and between Nádor Street and Bem Square, without restrictions for several months.
The urban section of Main Road 33 is being renovated along a stretch of approximately 2.5 kilometres. Work began in June this year and is scheduled to be completed by the end of November.
