Lane Closure Coming on Main Road 33 as Water Pipe Replacement Continues Near Balmazújvárosi Road
The Municipality of Debrecen and Debreceni Vízmű Zrt. are carrying out a comprehensive and coordinated infrastructure development programme along the section between Bem Square and the M35 motorway slip road. Underground utilities must be refurbished before road construction and resurfacing can begin, as some of the drinking water trunk mains running beneath Main Road 33 are more than 70 years old.
According to the water utility company, outdated pipes, fittings and valves in critical condition pose a significant risk under increasingly heavy traffic loads. The network must be replaced before the roadworks to prevent more serious failures in the future and avoid potential road surface collapses caused by burst pipes.
Another location will soon be added to the phased reconstruction programme already under way. Near Balmazújvárosi Road, in the vicinity of the METRÓ hypermarket, critical sections of the existing trunk mains will be upgraded and the connecting distribution pipes will be linked up to the new system. As a result, the outer straight-ahead lane at the junction of Balmazújvárosi Road and Kishatár Road will be closed on the side leading out of Debrecen towards the M35 motorway. Traffic will be restricted to a single lane, using the inner lane. The restriction will come into force on 28 October and is expected to remain in place until 30 November.
The work will be carried out using a modern trenchless technology known as the Process-Phoenix method, which involves pulling a resin-impregnated liner into the existing ageing pipes. A major advantage of this technique is that it minimises the need for excavation, avoiding the prolonged opening up of the entire road surface using traditional open trenches.
Motorists travelling through the area are asked to approach the work site with extra care and always follow the signs indicating the temporary traffic arrangements.
