Debrecen’s Population Grows Again as Outward Migration Slows Dramatically

While Hungary and its major cities continue to decline in population, Debrecen reached a turning point at the end of 2022 and over three years, the city’s resident population grew by nearly 750, while the net loss due to domestic out-migration fell to a fraction of its previous level, according to the latest analysis by EDC.

According to data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), the country’s resident population continues to declinebut Debrecen has clearly changed its demographic course. Since reaching a low point in early 2023, when its population stood at 201,582, the city’s population has risen steadily, reaching 202,331 on 1 January 2026. This increase of 749 people is particularly notable because the populations of all other cities outside the capital with more than 100,000 inhabitants, including Miskolc, Pécs, Győr, Nyíregyháza and Szeged, declined over the same period.

It is not only the county seat itself in Hajdú-Biar that is growing rapidly; Debrecen’s immediate metropolitan area is also expanding dynamically, with Hajdúsámson, Bocskaikert, Mikepércs, Hajdúszoboszló and Hajdúhadház recording a combined population increase of more than 4,200, although more distant areas continue to struggle with population decline. At the same time, the region’s ability to retain its population has improved significantly. While in 2024, outward migration from the Debrecen District exceeded inward numbers by 1,092 people, by 2025 this gap had almost disappeared, shrinking to just 137 – the most favourable figure in the past 12 years.

Although Budapest continues to exert a considerable pull, Debrecen is proving to be a powerful magnet for residents of eastern Hungary, attracting people from places including Nyíregyháza, Mátészalka, Kisvárda and Berettyóújfalu. EDC’s publication points out that this demographic turning point is closely linked to the city’s economic and labour-market boom. The number of people working in Debrecen has risen from 97,000 to 126,000, unemployment has fallen to around 3 per cent, and the gross average salary in the Debrecen District had reached nearly HUF 743,500 by 2025 – 5.4 per cent above the national average. Economic growth, a doubling in the number of commuters, and rising wages have therefore not only halted population decline but also put the city on a stable growth trajectory.
