Mayor Discusses Further Developments Planned for Debrecen’s School System
As industry expands, increasing numbers of young families are moving to major cities, potentially creating a need to expand educational facilities. According to Mayor László Papp, Debrecen’s existing educational infrastructure currently has sufficient capacity, but further developments are already being prepared.
Compared with the situation ten years ago, around 10,000 more students are now studying in Debrecen, partly as a result of the University’s expansion, László Papp said. According to the Mayor, thanks to economic growth, the city’s population has also begun to rise again after a period of decline. Over the past decade or so, new nurseries, kindergartens and schools have been built in Debrecen, while plans are currently under way to develop three vocational training institutions. One of the projects awaiting a government decision and to be financed with state support would also include the construction of a 250-place student hostel.
Meanwhile, a new school is being built in Józsa. “Development projects are under way in several parts of the city. Józsa is one of Debrecen’s fastest-growing districts, with institutional developments by church institutions also worth mentioning. The Roman Catholic Church is building a large school in Józsa which, given the district’s growing population, will be a particularly valuable addition to the local community,” László Papp emphasised.
