CATL’s Hungarian subsidiary supports engineering education at the University of Debrecen

“The University of Debrecen and CATL Debrecen signed a strategic cooperation agreement. The cooperation aims to promote the practical training of technicians, the development of curricula and the implementation of joint research projects in battery technology and energy. The partnership is an important milestone for CATL Debrecen in strengthening the supply of professionals in Hungary, for the university in developing engineering education that meets the needs of companies,” the company said in the company statement.

As described, the partnership would see the international leader in battery manufacturing participate in the practical training of University of Debrecen students and the development of the curriculum, ensuring students are directly exposed to the latest industrial innovations in battery development and manufacturing.

The company will also provide students with hands-on opportunities at its factory in Debrecen, where they can learn about state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and technologies.

They added that the cooperation would span several fields, including IT, engineering and natural sciences, as well as R&D, education, science and industry. “This will enable the company to provide the skilled graduate workforce needed to run the Debrecen plant in the long term,” they said.

“CATL is committed to training the professionals of the future. Through our partnership with the University of Debrecen, we provide students with the opportunity to acquire state-of-the-art industry knowledge, which is key in the rapidly evolving world of battery technology. We are proud of our R&D activities, which are central to technological innovation and the realisation of sustainable energy solutions. To effectively support the uptake of sustainable electric transport, a highly qualified workforce is essential, and the University of Debrecen’s strong track record is a guarantee for this, ” CATL’s Managing Director for European Operations Jason Chen emphasised.

It was pointed out that “the University of Debrecen is one of Hungary’s leading higher education institutions, offering comprehensive inter- and multidisciplinary courses and supporting scientific development through its significant R&D activities. The institution is committed to continuous innovation and educational development to ensure students have the most competitive professional skills. The university’s scientific background and infrastructure, as well as its training structure, allow it to explore and transfer cutting-edge research and technological advances”.

Rector of the University of Debrecen Zoltán Szilvássy emphasised that “multinational companies coming to Debrecen can count on the institution as a source of research, development and innovation knowledge and as a human resource base”.

“Our basic principle is to establish a relationship with the large companies settling in Debrecen that can be fruitful for both parties. Particular attention should be paid to the life sciences, pharmaceuticals and automotive sectors, as these are areas that are also a priority for the University of Debrecen’s teaching and research activities. CATL is one of the key players in the automotive industry, and its activities in many other areas of life are also of particular importance, there is great potential for our cooperation. We will do our utmost to achieve together some important steps in the development of scientific technology”, the Rector said.

“CATL Debrecen will soon become one of the largest employers in the Eastern Hungary region. The company has a long-term commitment to Hungary and Debrecen, and it considers it key to actively participate in workforce training and support institutions at all levels of education. CATL Debrecen signed an agreement with the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre in February 2024 to launch dual training, and in June it also agreed on a strategic partnership with the University of Miskolc. Further collaborations with educational institutions in the region are planned in the future,” the communication concludes.
