László Papp spoke about the economic development of Debrecen

Mayor László Papp gave a presentation titled “The impact of a major investment on the region’s economy “ at the Top 100 Economic Conference in Szeged.

The Csongrád-Csanádi Chamber of Commerce and Industry organised the fourth edition of the professional forum, which brought together the leaders of the best performing businesses in the region and local economic actors. The meeting focused on new business opportunities, challenges and innovative practices.

Increasing business productivity, future economic challenges, current investment trends and good practices were among the main topics of the Top 100 Economic Conference. Last December, it was announced that BYD, the world’s largest electric car manufacturer, is to build its first European plant in Szeged, creating thousands of new jobs and putting the southern Hungarian city on a growth path in one of the biggest investments in Hungarian economic history.

“BYD’s new investment is underway, and Linea Car’s investment has also begun, the effects of which will soon be felt in various sectors of the county’s economy. We do not yet know exactly at what pace and to what extent these effects will transform the economic environment,” President of the Csongrád-Csanádi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Attila Kőkuti said.

The keynote speaker of the conference was László Papp. The mayor of Debrecen gave a presentation on the economic development strategy of the city, highlighting the activities of the region’s key businesses and economic actors since 2014.

László Papp emphasised that in the last 10 years, the industrial areas of Debrecen have increased tenfold, creating 20,000 new jobs. As a result, more than HUF 5,000 billion of working capital has arrived in the city.

“In my view, a strategy is successful if it is able to focus on all the important areas in the life of the city and maintain a certain coherence between the development processes. It is not good if the economy is disconnected from transport or education opportunities, and it is not good if, for example, cultural services or other services in the city do not keep pace with other areas of development,” Mayor László Papp highlighted.

In addition to the transport and education developments in Debrecen in recent years, the mayor also presented the Főnix housing programme, showing good practice for Szeged, which is facing significant development.
