A New Pediatric Traumatology Department Established at the Kenézy Campus

The integration of the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen has created a healthcare institution with a patient traffic of over four million, which has regional and, in some cases, cross-border responsibilities.

In an interview with the university’s newspaper, Professor Zoltán Szabó, the president of the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen, stated that their activities, performed at the highest level of progressiveness, also extend to pediatric care. Significant infrastructural and professional developments have recently occurred in the Clinical Center in pediatric emergency care. One of the latest milestones in this development process is establishing the pediatric traumatology department under the professional supervision of the Orthopedic and Traumatology Clinic. This new department provides high-quality services in a well-equipped environment dedicated to accident care.

Two four-bed rooms and one two-bedroom have been established for inpatient care, while a pediatric traumatology waiting room and triage room have been created for outpatient care. The Clinical Center’s leadership visited the site on Wednesday to learn more about the new pediatric traumatology department’s operations. Thanks to these developments, the University of Debrecen now provides pediatric traumatology services at the highest progressive level.

The Clinical Center treats 20,000 children as outpatients annually, while nearly 5,000 pediatric accident victims are treated as inpatients. In 2024, over 8% of those examined for accident injuries were under 18.

Ferenc Urbán, the clinical coordinator of trauma and hand surgery at the Orthopedic and Traumatology Clinic, has emphasized that until now, pediatric patients were treated together with adults under a unified approach at the Orthopedic and Traumatology Clinic. Starting in 2024, however, pediatric traumatology has become a separate area within Hungary’s medical field, allowing them to treat injured children using the most modern methods based on unified principles. Thanks to these developments, they can now care for sick children separately, and parents can support their children’s recovery more effectively in independent hospital rooms.

Zoltán Karácsonyi, the orthopaedic clinical coordinator at the Orthopedic and Traumatology Clinic, added that with the new rooms, the clinic has gained a child-centred, European-standard healthcare facility. In this new department, children with developmental or congenital disabilities, as well as those with pathological fractures, will be treated in calmer and more discreet conditions than before.

Professor Béla Fülesdi, director of the Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Clinic, said that anesthesiologists’ primary task is to reduce patients’ pain during surgical procedures. While adults have learned to manage their pain reactions, children cannot. Therefore, there is a need for a discreet, calm, and friendly environment. The Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Clinic has set up a pediatric anesthesiology working group to provide even more effective care for injured children.

Mária Edit Nagy, an anesthesiologist and intensive care specialist at the Anesthesiology and Intensive Care Clinic and the leader of the pediatric anesthesiology group, believes that the rooms and waiting areas created through close collaboration among the specialists will more efficiently alleviate the pain, anxiety, and fears resulting from injuries, thus helping to speed up the children’s recovery. Patients should report to the accident and reception ward at the Kenézy Gyula Campus, which is signposted with patient direction and information boards. This ward provides medical examinations for accident injuries.
