Endangered species hatched at Debrecen Zoo

A vigorous Philippine banded monitor lizard (Asian water monitor – Varanus salvator) has hatched at Zoo Debrecen.

The wild population of this species has recently declined significantly and is therefore on the IUCN Red List. In Hungary, it is only seen at Zoo Debrecen and in only 17 institutions worldwide. The Debrecen breeding pair successfully bred in 2024 in a unique way, the result of 5 years of professional work.
