Programmes to celebrate Debrecen City Day and the 176th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence

In honour of Debrecen City Day and the 176th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, numerous programs await the people of Debrecen on April 11, 2025. The series of events will begin with a ceremonial flag raising with the participation of the Debrecen Garrison Orchestra at the Old Town Hall.

During the day, among others, visitors can enjoy a City Day Food Tasting, a city history walk, and various performances and concerts. To close the day, theater-loving audiences can attend the performance of Pál Ábrahám’s grand operetta, titled “Victoria” at the Csokonai Theatre.

“Cívis Values” – an unusual history lesson at the Kölcsey Centre

Interactive exhibition and presentation of crafts typical of Debrecen in the circular corridor. (pottery, gingerbread, leatherworking) Partners: Ady Grammar School, DEMKI

9.00 a.m.Opening of the 24-hour high school competition “Sleep Another Time”

Kossuth Square

2.00 p.m.
City Day Food Tasting at Kossuth Square
Greetings: Mayor László Papp,
Chancellor of the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre, Zsolt Tirpák and Vice President of the Hajdúság Gastronomy Club, Master Chef Lajos Tóth.
Taste of 1693 pieces of dill buns, Debrecen “batyu” (Debrecen gourment puff pastry), and distribution of a recipe for a traditional Debrecen dish.
Participiant: Debrecen Hajdú Dance Ensemble (Hortobágy stick dance).
The Debrecen Garrison Orchestra has been included in the Debrecen Treasures register. Presentation of the certificate of honour and a short concert. The certificate of honour will be presented by the Chairman of the Debrecen Treasures Committee, Dr. János Mazsu, and received by conductor István Pál.
Kossuth Square
Presentation of Attila Katona’s bicycle collection. Those interested can try out old and new pieces, from the 1800s to the present day.Kossuth Square
Those interested can listen to a lecture entitled “The Devilish Professor” (István Hatvani) in Agora.AGORA
Stroll through the city centre as part of the renewed local history exhibition, “The World of Cívis”
Presented by historian Katalin Váradi.

The sculptor’s work will be presented under the title “Medgyessy Freely”. Viewing the antecedents, sketches and plans of the public sculpture displayed in the Medgyessy oeuvre exhibition space, followed by a presentation of the history of the creation of the sculptures placed under the arcade of the building. Furthermore, viewing the building-decorating reliefs and circular sculptures found in the public spaces of Debrecen. The next stop is the Reformed College, where numerous reliefs by the sculptor can be found. The last location is Déri Square, where the evocation of the sculptor’s figure ends with the presentation of the four allegorical sculptures.

Thematic walk to the graves of Debrecen poets with Nóra Erdei.
Participation is free, but registration is required due to limited numbers.

Debrecen Public Cemetery
7.00 p.m.Bordó Sárkány concertKölcsey Centre
Kodály Choir concert in the Reformed Great Church entitled “Light and Shadow”.
The programme includes works by Louis Vierne: Messe solennelle, and Arvo Pärt: Adam’s Lament.
Performers: Dániel Sárosi – organ and the artists of the Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Zoltán Kocsis–Holper.
