German Career Day: German language skills are an advantage on the job market

At the event held at the Kölcsey Center, hundreds of high school students learned about local job and career opportunities at the stands of German-based Debrecen companies, which play a significant role in the city’s economic life, from the industry to the service sector.

The German company, Bürkle launched its high-tech machine manufacturing plant in the city six years ago. Since then, the company has expanded its factory and, as a partner of DSZC (Debrecen Vocational Training Centre), has also become involved in vocational training which currently has 12 students in dual training, employs 70 professionals, and would like to further expand its staff, and is looking for good professionals.

“What we need are basically technicians and engineers. While we are here, I must say that of course English is also important, but German is particularly important. We are constantly looking for electrical technicians, mechatronics technicians and engineers,”  Factory Director Gábor Laczkó emphasised at the career day.

In the past ten years, 14 German companies have invested a total of HUF 970 billion in Debrecen, creating almost five thousand new jobs. Companies with a German background play a significant role in the city’s economic life, and their settlement in Debrecen is also due to the quality of German language education.

“It is very important that we follow education and develop German language skills in parallel. In this, the Debrecen Vocational Training Center and the school district are also very serious partners of the city’s leadership, as nearly five thousand children learn German every day in the city, so you can say that the supply is given,”Deputy Mayor Lajos Barcsa explained.

The German Career Day provided a comprehensive picture of the advantage of German language skills in the Debrecen labour market and the career opportunities that German companies offer young people. Not only students who know German well visited the event, but also those who are considering learning German in order to start a successful career. The 4th German Career Day was organised by the Debrecen German Cultural Forum and supported by the local government, at which ten German-based companies from Debrecen, from industry to the service sector, presented their job and career opportunities to hundreds of interested high school students.
