Secondary school students can apply for the Young Talents Programme

Ten million forints from the charity proceeds of the Debrecen Ball will support talented students and their mentors. Details of this were announced at a press conference at the Old Town Hall on April 24, 2025.

Mayor László Papp pointed out that Debrecen has a decades-long tradition of supporting talented students. Among these is the “Cívis Talentum” scholarship launched by the city, which the city provides every year to students with significant domestic or international educational achievements. The city leader announced that ten million forints from the charity proceeds of the Debrecen Ball will be used to support talented secondary school students in Debrecen, together with the University of Debrecen and the Hajdú-Bihar County Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The mayor, speaking about the details, said that the application will be announced by the Public Foundation for Talented Debrecen Youth and the applications received will be evaluated by a judiciary. He highlighted that all young people studying in secondary schools in Debrecen can apply for the competition, regardless of whether they are students of the school district, the vocational training centre or an institution maintained by the church, and the amount can be used for student and mentor support, of which 700 thousand forints will be available for the student and 300 thousand forints for the mentor.

President of the Hajdú-Bihar County Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Ferenc Miklóssy, said that he believes that the prosperity of a nation today depends on how well it can utilise its human capital. He noted that at least as many talented young people are born in Hungary today as there were a hundred years ago, and supporting these young people is very important.

Rector of the University of Debrecen, Prof. Dr. Zoltán Szilvássy, said that the university has a strategic decision to address both secondary school and primary school students with its talent development programmes. He said that the call for applications, which will be published around May 10, will primarily target third-year secondary school students and those younger than that.

Chancellor of the Debrecen Vocational Training Centre, Zsolt Tirpák, noted that Debrecen has always been an intellectual centre, where there were ways and opportunities for talent development and embracing talents. “Apart from modern technology, one of the most powerful and important investments is intellectual capital, and supporting students is key, whether in vocational training or in public education,” the Chancellor emphasised. He highlighted that students and mentors applying for the call can create a creative team that can apply in ten areas, and these ten areas cover the most important creative areas of public education and vocational training.

“Knowledge from experience, success from knowledge. This is the motto and slogan of the Debrecen Regional Education Centre, and I believe that this application also faithfully reflects this motto,” said the Director of the Debrecen Regional Education Centre, László Türk said. He added that they will preserve the talent development that has been present in the city of Debrecen for decades, but at the same time they will further develop it, and with this application, the city once again demonstrates how much education in Debrecen is a matter of the heart.
