Did you know about Debrecen Zoo?

When it comes to family-friendly outings and wildlife experiences, the Debreden Zoo stands out as a gem. Nestled in the heart of the Great Forest, this zoo not only offers visitors a chance to see exotic animals up close but also has a rich history that adds depth to the adventure. Debrecen Zoo’s mission extends beyond visitor entertainment to wildlife conservation and public education, participating in global programmes to protect endangered species and their habitats.

Let’s explore some fascinating facts and the historical significance of the Debrecen Zoo!

This institution, dreamed up among the magical trees of Debrecen’s Great Forest, has been welcoming guests since 1958.

Hungary’s first zoo outside the capital and one and only classic amusement park, offers a year-round experience that connects all generations.

From a small area at the time of its foundation, the zoo has grown to cover 17 hectares and now exhibits around 900 specimens of 170 species from five continents.

The role of zoos has changed significantly over the last decade, with zoos increasingly playing a barrier role in the conservation of wildlife.

Zoo education has become a new and exciting discipline in its own right. For young and old alike, the experience of independent “discovery” and the direct, personal experience of the secrets of the animal world and nature can be experienced in zoo sessions, guided tours, zoological camps, quizzes and special days.

Today’s visitors can see old runs built over the past decades, alongside a dynamically changing garden with new ‘habitat’ type displays. These exhibits now allow animals to be observed in their natural habitat, and provide a much greater sense of well-being and welfare for the species living in these conditions than before.

Since 1961, the zoo has been merged with the Amusement Park, under the name of the Great Forest Cultural Park. With its 21 play facilities, the Amusement Park is the largest and most patronised institution in the region.

The area of the Culture Park has been protected since 1994 and is home to 650 species of plants. The institution is a founding member of the Association of Hungarian Zoos and since 1994 it has been a full member of the most prestigious professional organisation on the continent, the European Association of Aquariums and Zoos.

Debrecen Zoo offers special events and seasonal exhibits ensuring that there’s always something new to discover. For current operating hours, ticket prices, and special events, please be sure to check their official website.

Whether you’re an animal enthusiast, a casual visitor, or looking for a fun family outing, it’s a spot that shouldn’t be missed.
