Children could try out 20 sports at city’s sports day

On May 24, 2025, Debrecen offered kids the opportunity to try out handball, climbing, baseball, and rhythmic gymnastics, among other sports. Twenty different sports await the children in the programme “The World is Whole with You!”

Debrecen Sports Centre organised the event for the 11th time in the Oláh Gábor Street sports complex.

The gloomy weather did not discourage the children from playing sports. They tried out various sports in good spirits at the event called “The World is Round with You!”

“There are a lot of sports in it, and I love sports,” Dániel Roland Király said. “Even very young children know why sports are important: because they keep us healthy,” Vivien Egri noted.

The programme aims for children to learn about and try as many sports as possible in one day. Parents are also happy about this opportunity.

“The boys have a lot of energy, and we would like to find a sport that suits them,” Sándor Király explained.

DSI’s qualified coaches and former competitors tried to instil in the young people a desire for an active lifestyle in a playful way.

“We visit every year because there are outstanding sports events. Our favorite is the climbing wall: as you can see, we immediately signed up. So we spent a whole day here with my children,” Regina Nagy emphasised.

There was an opportunity to try out 20 sports. Of these, 16 belong to DSI, but playing baseball and climbing a wall was also possible. There is also an example that the participants later consciously seek out the “more extreme” forms of exercise they learned here.

“We see that the children find a connection with sports here. For example, they learn ball games, rhythmic gymnastics equipment, badminton, and fencing. And in kindergarten or when they go to school, they will purposefully seek out these sports,” the main organiser of the event, Nóra Berettyán, pointed out.

The little ones could also meet therapy dogs Pajti and Mira, and representatives of the “Move, Debrecen!” initiative were also waiting for the families.

According to Deputy Mayor Diána Széles, it is very important that exercise be an experience and about the community. “We also want to educate families to play sports with family members, because what could be more important than a shared experience with a family game involving exercise. We want to achieve that everyone in Debrecen moves and that the weekend is not about people being between four walls, but about providing them with as many free opportunities for exercise as possible,” the deputy mayor highlighted.

The organisers wanted to encourage children to try as many forms of exercise as possible. Therefore, those who attempted at least ten sports received a gift.
