BMW Group Plant Debrecen supported the professional training of vehicle engineering students

At the BMW Training Centre, 41 automotive engineering undergraduate and automotive manufacturing BSc students from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Debrecen learned, among other things, about virtual welding, 3D CAD modelling, programming, and the use of a 3D printer over 4 weeks, for a total of 16 hours.

According to Sándor Bodzás, associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of UD, students need to learn about the most modern technologies and how to handle them, as this industry is constantly and dynamically evolving. The new BMW training centre is a great place for this.

“The first practical training of this kind was held last spring, when, following the educational programme of the Debrecen car factory, the students learned metalworking practice and automotive knowledge. Since then, the programme has been expanded to include electronics, 3D printing, automation, and programming, among other things, but great emphasis has been placed on 3D CAD modelling exercises, such as virtual welding. The models designed in this way were also manufactured with 3D printers,” the associate professor of the Department of Mechanical Engineering told hirek.unideb.hu.

Regarding the simulators, Sándor Bodzás explained, “ This cost-effective and innovative method allows students to acquire technical fundamentals in a safe environment.”

“The relationship with BMW has also transformed the training system of the Faculty of Engineering. The focus of our training programme has been on acquiring practical knowledge, and modern technologies integrated into the curriculum, especially manufacturing technology and robotics, have become of paramount importance,” assistant professor at the Faculty of Engineering of UD, István Erdei Timotei, added.

The specialist also mentioned that students from the Faculty of Engineering performed vehicle assembly tasks at the company’s Debrecen Training Centre to gain practical experience in the construction, operation, and maintenance processes of individual vehicles. Since BMW announced that it would build its new factory in Debrecen, the number of applicants for vehicle engineering training at the Faculty of Engineering of UD has increased significantly.
