7600 international students study in Debrecen
As dehir.hu reported earlier, more than 31,000 people applied for the courses announced by the University of Debrecen for the 2024/25 academic year. This was also contributed by the fact that last year’s data for the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship programme exceeded the record number of applications in 2023 by more than 15 percent.
At that time, Elek Bartha, Vice Rector for Education, told dehir.hu that the university is well known for educating the largest number of foreign students among domestic higher education institutions.
Dehir contacted the press department of the University of Debrecen, whose communications officer pointed out that the University of Debrecen currently has 7,625 foreign students from 140 countries, of whom 6,655 continue their studies in the institution’s more than 100 English-language programmes, in addition to BSc and MSc programmes, in preparatory courses and in doctoral schools.
“The most popular are medical, IT and engineering courses, but we also offer opportunities in agricultural, economic, legal, human, health, dental, pharmaceutical, music and various scientific fields. The International Education Coordination Centre of the University of Debrecen supports the student years of foreign students. The organisation provides support to members of the international student community in legal and administrative tasks related to their studies,” he said.
“The University of Debrecen also provides general medical care and mental health services to its foreign students, and also helps students find accommodation,” he explained.
He underlined that the course called Hungarian as a foreign language is available to foreign students at the university, and they can also join numerous professional programmes, such as TalentUD, the University of Debrecen Talent Management Program (abbreviated as DETEP in Hungarian), or the work of the professional colleges.
“Mentors help young people integrate at the university. They have independent interest representation within UD’s Student Government, and the International Student Union organises numerous leisure events for them: the “Fresher’s” week, Food Day, sports days, cultural programmes, talent search events, and excursions. In addition, the individual faculties help their foreign students integrate with community-building programmes, “ the press department pointed out.
“Despite the strict employment conditions for foreigners, there are students who stay in Hungary. The Graduate Career Tracking System at the University of Debrecen also extends to foreign students,” they added.
