A new family and child welfare centre has opened in Debrecen

The Family and Child Welfare Centre of the City of Debrecen has opened a new location at 29 Mátyás király Street, providing family support and child welfare services in a modern and easily accessible environment.

Following the renovation, the centre provides broader support to families and children in need, supplemented by special counselling and on-site assistance. The centre was officially presented by Deputy Mayor Diána Széles, municipal representative Edina Szilágyi, and institution manager Aurélia Ibolya Orosz.

The opening of the Mátyás király Street location is a significant milestone in supporting families living in Debrecen. The transformation of the building, which previously served as a branch library, has created a modern, family-friendly environment where professionals can perform their tasks more efficiently. The new location will assist residents of the Csapókert, Júliatelep, Dombostanya, Szikigyakor, Tornyostanya, Nagycsere, Haláp and Bellegelő-kert areas, who previously had to visit the more distant Víztorony Street office.

Deputy Mayor Diána Széles emphasized that Debrecen continues to place families at the centre of its caring city programme. “We want everyone to live well and happily, but unfortunately, we see that there are still difficult situations that we, through family support organizations, need to help and practically mentor families. That is why it is important to bring care and services as close to families as possible. At this renovated site, we can now provide a level of service that serves Debrecen families much better.” Deputy Mayor Diána Széles pointed out that forty-one thousand children are affiliated with the Family and Child Welfare Centre, of which 2,800 families are being cared for. She also thanked her colleagues for their dedicated work, with special mention to the summer childcare organized by the centre again this year.

Municipal representative Edina Szilágyi recalled the history, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in implementing the investment. “In 2019, when I became a representative, the first major project was the renovation of the Csapókerti Community Centre. We realized then that the community centre was not suitable for family support services in terms of its function. We thought a lot about finding a place that we could renovate and create a community here that is worthy of us,” she said, adding that the newly renovated building is in a perfect location. She trusts that those who live and work here will feel the love and dedication that were invested in the creation of this centre.

Aurélia Ibolya Orosz, Head of the DMJV Family and Child Welfare Centre, emphasized that the opening of the new location is not only due to the institution’s needs but also to the needs of the people living in Csapókert. “We have already had 100 families visit us, so we are currently dealing with that many families, but I think this number will triple since the people living in Csapókert don’t have to go further afield for the services,” she said, adding that they could also bring disability counselling here. Still, professionals need to assess local needs. They are also open to the idea of a developmental teacher coming here. They can also provide psychological and legal counselling.
With the opening of the Mátyás király Street location, not only has the building been renovated, but the quality of social care has also reached a new level. The new building of the DMJV Family and Child Welfare Centre will welcome residents 8 hours a day from 1 June.
