A collection of almost a hundred bikes on display at the Night of Museums

The first permanent exhibition of bicycles from the private collection of veteran bicycle collector and restorer Attila Katona opened in Debrecen in the summer of 2024. The museum houses around a hundred bicycles, which visitors can take a journey through time, starting with the first wooden bicycle invented by Karl von Drais and the first pedal bicycle by Pierre Michaux.

One of the prides of the collection is the series of bicycles of Hungarian craftsmen, including several unique examples from masters such as Ferenc Bécs, Miksa Essenfeld or Nándor Velvárt, but of course there are also old Csepel bicycles, more than 100 years old.

The museum also has a display of Italian racing bicycles, including several that competed in the world famous Italian road race, the Giro d’Italia, decades ago.

This private collection will be the subject of a guided tour starting on 21 June at 7:00 p.m. at the Bicycle Museum (30 Piac Street), as part of the Night of Museums series. At the event, Attila Katona will present not only the history of bicycles, but also his work, which has been included in the Debrecen Register of Values and has become a National Value.

The two-wheeled bicycles will be on display from 1817, from the Karl von Drais wooden pedal cycle to the bicycles in use today.

More details of the event can be found on here.
