Debrecen takes care of its residents even during the heat alert

During the third-degree heat alert, the Municipality of Debrecen is once again helping city residents by distributing drinking water and operating vapour gates.

Between June 24 and 26, volunteers of the Debrecen Charity Board will distribute water at three downtown locations; cooling and humidifying equipment will also be in operation at several locations.

The city advises residents to maintain adequate fluid intake, with a particular focus on children and older people.

Given the third-degree heat alert, the Municipality of Debrecen is organising drinking water distribution at three frequented points in the city centre between June 24 and 26, on weekdays between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Volunteers of the Debrecen Charity Board will participate in the water distribution, providing drinking water to the passersby at the intersection of Hatvan Street and Kossuth Square (in front of the Nap Pharmacy), at the corner of Csapó Street and Dósa nádor Square, and in front of the Fórum Shopping Centre.

During the summer heat waves, prevention is essential, which is why the city of Debrecen is not only distributing water but also operating vapour gates at several points to relieve the heat. The humidifiers have been operating for weeks at Kossuth Square, Dósa nádor Square, Csonkatemplom (Reformed Small Church), Angyalföld Square in Tócóskert, and the Víztorony Promenade.

Deputy Mayor Diána Széles said at the water distribution that as a caring city, Debrecen is paying special attention to protecting residents during heat alerts this year as well. The distribution of drinking water and the operation of vapour gates also serve to alleviate the burden of the heat wave for the city’s residents. She added, “I would like to thank the volunteers of the Debrecen Charity Board for rushing to help the city so quickly. Adequate water supply is significant in extreme heat, and we would like to draw the attention of the residents to this: always have drinking water at hand and drink regularly.”

President of the Debrecen Charity Board, Edit Bódor, said, “As soon as the date of the heat alert was announced, the recruitment of volunteers among the member organisations began immediately, and the water distribution team was formed in a short time.” She highlighted that the lobby of the Great Church in the city centre will also be open for refreshment: between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., the cool interior will provide temporary shelter from the heat.

To alleviate the heat, increased care is also being taken to irrigate the city’s green areas. Public green areas are watered at dawn or late at night, and special attention is paid to the operation of automatic irrigation systems. Public drinking fountains and fountains are also operating continuously, helping to refresh.

The local government of Debrecen is asking the population to pay special attention to children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with cardiovascular diseases. It is imperative that no one leaves home without water, and we should not forget about pets: we should also provide them with enough fresh drinking water on hot days.
