Scholarship-winning artists and talents honoured in Debrecen – 2025
The Kölcsey Ferenc Scholarship, Békessy Béla Sports Scholarship and Cívis Talentum Scholarship were awarded on June 26, 2025 at the Old Town Hall.
Deputy Mayor István Puskás presented the awards.
The Kölcsey Ferenc Scholarship, established in 2006 by the General Assembly of the Municipality of Debrecen, can be awarded to a natural person or legal entity working in the field of cultural life to encourage the creation of valuable works about Debrecen that strengthen the identity of local citizens and their attachment to the city.
The award was presented to painter Tamás Vékony in 2025. The winning applicant’s goal is to create a community mural on the wall of the Batthyány Street passageway based on a 1968 linocut. The vibrant world of Batthyány Street inspired the original engraving in the sixties: the “Ludas” presszó (coffee bar), the Hapák photo studio, and the Kerékgyártó gingerbread shop all appear in it. The relevance of the theme of the application is that in 2026, we celebrate the 90th anniversary of the birth of János Józsa, one of Debrecen’s most unique visual artists, who captured the city’s past, streets, characters, and moods in his graphics and paintings, leaving a rich visual legacy for posterity.
The Békessy Béla Sports Scholarship, established by the Municipality of Debrecen in 2016, aims to promote successful participation in international sports competitions. It can be awarded to support an athlete competing in a Debrecen sports organisation, participating in individual or team sports, whether amateur or professional, and in any age group, who has achieved outstanding results at the Olympics, Paralympics, World Games, World Championships, World Cup, or European Championships.
This year, the Municipality of Debrecen awarded the Béla Békessy Sports Scholarships to athlete Attila Csaba Arany, aerobics competitor Viktória Bányász, fencer Sugár Katinka Battai, triathlete Gergő Dobi, wheelchair fencer Dániel Göttlinger, boxer Nóra Komjáthi, athlete Luca Kozák, fencer Blanka Virág Nagy, swimmer-fin swimmer Petra Senánszky, and fin swimmer Sára Suba.
The Cívis Talentum Scholarship, established in 2016, aims to contribute to successful participation in international competitions. The scholarship can be awarded to a talented secondary school student studying in Debrecen who, in addition to their school studies, has participated in an international academic competition in the fields of humanities, natural sciences, foreign languages, arts, information technology, or as part of vocational training, and who also provides exemplary, outstanding performance for their fellow students.
The city government awarded the Cívis Talentum Scholarship to Júlia Baran (Fazekas Mihály Grammar School), Noémi Bodor (Fazekas Mihály Grammar School), Árpád Csegény (Kossuth Lajos Teacher Practice Grammar School and Primary School of the University of Debrecen), Marcell Jurácsik (Fazekas Grammar School), and Dóra Lesku (Tóth Árpád Grammar School).
