Animal-friendly title awarded to several Debrecen institutions
Hungarian educational institutions were once again eligible to apply for the Animal Friendly label.
Every year, educational institutions committed to promoting responsible pet ownership and animal welfare can apply through the Animal Welfare for Children program.
This year, 553 schools took part in the competition. Seven Debrecen institutions were also declared animal-friendly under the Animal Protection for Children competition, including the Lorántffy Zsuzsanna Primary School, which last year also earned the title of Animal-Friendly Primary School, the Kindergarten of the University of Debrecen, the Bocskai István Primary School, the Dózsa György Primary School, the Bárczi Gusztáv Unified Methodological Institute for Special Education in Debrecen, the DNRE Immánuel Home and School and the Epreskerti Primary School.
At Lorántffy Zsuzsanna Primary School, a responsible animal husbandry course commenced in 2023, offering students the opportunity to gain practical experience alongside theoretical knowledge. Collections are regularly organised for nearby animal shelters, and donations are delivered in person, giving children a direct experience of the importance of animal welfare.
A dedicated teacher of responsible pet ownership and animal welfare, Csabáné Soós – known to the children as ‘the dog teacher’ – has been awarded the title of ‘Animal-Friendly Ambassador’ again this year. On her social media page, Edina Szilágyi, Debrecen’s animal welfare officer, also congratulated the recipients.
