Nagyerdei Open - Air StageCoopera’s annual summer gala presents a distinguished evening of opera and operetta beneath the canopy of Debrecen’s Great Forest, celebrating Hungary’s artistic heritage through the performances of acclaimed national artists.
The concert features a selection of the most iconic melodies from the operatic and operetta repertoire, interpreted by the foremost representatives of Hungarian performing arts. More than a musical performance, the gala serves as a celebration of national identity, an occasion that not only entertains, but also revives and honors Hungary’s values, traditions, and cultural treasures.
Central to this celebration are the Hungaricums, which the concert pays tribute to through its artistic program. But what exactly is a Hungarikum?
A Hungarikum is a collective term used to describe unique Hungarian values that represent the country’s cultural, historical, gastronomic, scientific, or artistic heritage. These are items, traditions, or achievements considered to be of outstanding quality and significance, embodying the essence of Hungarian identity. Officially recognized by the Hungarian Parliament and the Hungarikum Committee, Hungaricums encompass everything from traditional foods and folk art to architectural landmarks and musical traditions.
By showcasing the richness of Hungarian opera and operetta, this concert brings these national treasures to life, offering audiences a vivid and heartfelt experience.
The performing artists of the gala include Mónika Fischl, Marika Oszvald, Szilvi Szendi, Gergely Boncsér, Levente Molnár, and Károly Peller, all distinguished figures in Hungarian opera and operetta. The musical accompaniment will be provided by the Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra Debrecen, under the baton of Dániel Somogyi-Tóth, the orchestra’s artistic director.
The gala concert is held at the historic Nagyerdei Open-Air Stage, a venue that has hosted cultural events for over 75 years and remains a cornerstone of Debrecen’s artistic life.
