Mosquito control in Debrecen

Ground-based chemical and biological mosquito control will be carried out in the settlement area, under the organization of the municipality.

In accordance with the measures outlined in the Green Codex, the Municipality of Debrecen has established mosquito control on a scientifically sound and environmentally friendly basis. This year, they are only using ground-based, locally applied mosquito control technologies, which are more local and gentler on the settlement’s wildlife than aerial control.

They are regularly examining mosquito breeding sites with the help of a specialist. As part of this, they regularly monitor the amount of mosquito larvae in the waters of inhabited areas in the city throughout the summer, laying the foundation for the implementation of selective, environmentally friendly biological controls that prevent the development of mosquitoes in the larval stage. In addition to monitoring the larval count, they conduct bite count surveys, based on which they apply chemical control against adult mosquitoes in justified cases to prevent health risks.

This sustainability approach, which is also present in mosquito control, also supports their efforts to achieve the title of Green Capital, which is clearly demonstrated by the fact that out of the 10 evaluated applications, the city’s sustainability efforts received the highest evaluation score, and on October 2, they will be able to “compete” between the 3 finalists in Vilnius for the title of “European Green Capital 2027.”

Based on the larval count measurements and bite count surveys conducted in recent days, they have entrusted our contractors with implementing the following control measures.

Ground chemical mosquito control:

Treatment dates: August 13, 14, and 15, 2025 – Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday – in the hours after sunset (additional days: August 16 and 17).

The treatment schedule is expected to be:

  • Wednesday:
    • Great Forest: Móricz Zsigmond Road, Benczúr Gyula Road, Dóczy József Road, Nagyerdei Körút (and the section of Hadházi út closed by it), Ady Endre Road, Nagyerdei Park, Nagyerdei Stadium area
    • In the inner city and inner ring areas: Vénkert, Libakert, Óváros
    • In the western part of the city: Nyulas, Liget Residential Park, Akadémia kert, Csigekert
  • On Thursday:
    • In the western part of the city: Újkert, Sestakert, Köntöskert, Nagy Sándor estate, Fészek residential park, Tócóskert, Tócóvölgy, Hatvan utcai kert, Vargakert, Postakert, Széchényi kert, Tégláskert, Epreskert, Józsa, and Kismacs.
    • In the eastern part of the city: Kassai Road and its surroundings, Nagyerdő-alja.
  • On Friday:
    • In the Eastern part of the city: Júliatelep, Csapókert, Meggyes, Szabadságtelep, Bihari kert, Homokkert, József Attila kert, Lencz-kert, Kerekestelep, Dobozi Housing Estate, Fényes-udvar, Sóház, and Biczó István kert to Csárda Street.

The schedule may change due to weather or technical reasons, which may cause treatment work to be delayed by an additional day or days, including Saturday and Sunday.

Product used: Deltasect Plus 1.2 ULV mosquito repellent. The product, in the small amount applied (0.6 liters/hectare), only kills more sensitive insects, is not dangerous to warm-blooded animals or humans, and its active ingredient breaks down within a few hours.

Recommended measures for the public:

It is recommended to collect or cover children’s toys, food, cutlery, and clothes dried outdoors on the day of treatment; to keep windows and doors closed during the treatment and for 1 hour afterwards; to turn off artificial ventilation equipment that brings in outside air; and to wash vegetables and fruits grown in the treated area before consumption or processing. You must not be in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle performing the treatment.

Mosquito larvae can develop in as little as a week in rainwater stored outdoors in uncovered containers and in various objects. As a supplement to mosquito control treatment, it is recommended that property owners eliminate, regularly empty, or cover small pools of stagnant water around buildings.

Ground biological larval control:

  • in the water collection ditch on Köntösgátsor
  • as a continuation of this, on the section of the Tócó Stream along Kisállomás that receives it.

Treatment date: Monday, August 18, 2025, between 08:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. (additional day: August 19).

During the treatment, the product is sprayed on the open water surface. By preventing the development of larvae, they also prevent the laying of eggs and the reproduction of the next generation, thus significantly reducing mosquito damage in surrounding residential areas and the need for subsequent chemical mosquito control.

The product only affects the biting mosquito larvae. The treatments are carried out by a health gas master. No precautions are required from the public. Mosquito-selective microbiological control uses the bacteria Bacillus thuringiensis. These microbes, during their natural life processes, produce spores that are consumed by mosquito larvae and die during the digestion process. The method’s advantage lies in its high degree of selectivity, which means it is not harmful to other aquatic organisms and has no effect on terrestrial insects.

The National Center for Public Health and Pharmacy has prepared separate information material for questions related to mosquito control, which is available at https://nnk.gov.hu/index.php/jarvanyugyi-es-infekciokontroll-foosztaly/141-lakossagi-tajekoztatok/altalanos-tajekoztatok/2596-gyakran-ismetelt-kerdesek-a-szunyogirtasrol.html.

Information on frequently asked questions regarding the national mosquito control program coordinated by the Disaster Management Authority can be found on its website.
