Ravel’s stars lit up Debrecen on the Night of Classics

The opening events of Carnival Week featured world-famous melodies performed by the artists of the Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra.

On Friday, August 15, classical music lovers were treated to an evening of music as the Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra’s chamber ensembles performed at various locations throughout the city center. The event kicked off at 4:30 p.m. at Dósa nádor Square with a performance by cellist Tibor Bényi.

The Night of the Classics was crowned by a concert by the Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra on the main stage set up in Kossuth Square, where the audience could hear Mussorgsky-Ravel’s piece Pictures at an Exhibition and Ravel’s Bolero in tribute to the French composer Maurice Ravel, who was born 150 years ago.

The orchestra was conducted by Dániel Somogyi-Tóth, the chief music director of Debrecen, who raised the musical standard of the evening.

After the orchestra concert, the audience was treated to choral music by the Saint Ephraim Male Choir in the Memorial Garden behind the Great Church.

In keeping with tradition, the evening closed with “A Little Night Music” performed by the Kodály Philharmonic Orchestra in the Memorial Garden behind the Great Church, conducted by Tibor Bényi.
