After its success at the Budapest Music Center, this moving performance now comes to Debrecen, featuring Renaissance masterpieces and contemporary compositions, exploring the timeless beauty and evolving language of sacred music.
The cult of Mary has served as a source of inspiration not only in the visual arts but also in sacred music throughout the centuries. There are at least three thousand musical settings of the Latin prayer Ave Maria, and new compositions continue to be created today, giving musical voice to prayers addressed to the Virgin Mary. The Kodály Choir’s September season-preview concert, blending Renaissance works with contemporary pieces, demonstrates how musical language is constantly evolving and renewing itself, while spiritual depth remains timeless.
The program of the spiritual journey through centuries of Marian devotion, featuring Renaissance and contemporary choral works includes:
- Tomás Luis de Victoria: Ave Maria for 8 voices
- Miklós Csemiczky (1954): Ave Maria
- Zoltán Kovács (1969): Ave Maria
- Carlo Gesualdo: Ave dulcissima Maria
- Ola Gjeilo (1978): Ave Generosa
- Péter Zombola (1983): Ave maris stella
- Giovanni Gabrieli: Beata es, Virgo Maria
- Levente Gyöngyösi (1975): O Maria noli flere
- Márton Levente Horváth (1983): Magnificat primi toni
- Ferenc Sapszon Jr. (1952): Hail Mary
