Almost twenty thousand students and two thousand teachers will start the new school year in Debrecen schools

Debrecen School District Center held an opening conference for the school year on August 22, 2025, where they evaluated the previous year and discussed the challenges of the new school year. Teachers who did outstanding work were recognized at the event.

A gold medal school year—28 percent of primary school students and 20 percent of secondary school students were able to end the previous school year with a certificate of honor. The average grade point average of all institutions of the Debrecen School District Center was 4.17. There are more than twenty institutions in Debrecen where the average grade point average exceeded four, as reported at the opening conference of the Debrecen Regional Education Center.

“Our school has always believed that teaching is not just about transferring knowledge but also about building a community. To highlight that we, educators, leaders, teachers, and school district employees, work together for a common cause,” principal of Epreskerti Elementary School Csilla Gondáné Fórián highlighted.

As mentioned, “It is not only certificates that reveal the outstanding abilities of students: in the past academic year, students won more than 300 podium places or special awards in international competitions and almost 1,200 in national competitions, thereby enhancing Debrecen’s reputation both abroad and at home.”

“In addition to delivering the curriculum, we must prepare the future generation for the challenges of the world. In the great moments of life, our students will stand their ground if we can show them within the school gates how it is worth preparing for these situations,” director of the Debrecen School District Center László Türk emphasized.

Almost 1,700 secondary school students finished last year with an intermediate language exam, and 500 are starting this year with an advanced language exam. This pattern is also being followed by primary school students, as in addition to the successful junior language exams, there are more and more people who are already sitting in school with a complex intermediate language exam.

“Teachers are responsible for the education of this generation, and the local government is responsible for ensuring that these fantastic institutions are coordinated,” Deputy Mayor Diána Széles added.

A key task for the Debrecen School District Center is to attract and retain the new generation of teachers. In recent years, teacher salaries have increased at an unprecedented rate.

Teachers working at institutions belonging to the Debrecen School District Center can now take home an average of HUF 300,000 more than they did a few years ago. This can also motivate young people to choose this career path, as pointed out at the conference, where it was highlighted that work continued in schools during the vacation so that the 2025/2026 school year could begin in an orderly, safe, and modern environment. In recent months, more than 25,500 square meters of wall space have been repainted.

At the school year-opening event, the work of outstanding teachers was recognized, and those who received the public education employee award were congratulated.
