Mihály Munkácsy’s paintings of Christ have been on display together at the Déri Museum for thirty years.
Within the anniversary programmes, “30 years Together – Munkácsy Mihály’s Christ trilogy” (“30 éve együtt Munkácsy Mihály Krisztus-trilógiája) on August 30, 2025, at 4:00 p.m., the Déri Museum will host a special light show event to celebrate Munkácsy Mihály’s monumental Christ Trilogy: Ecce Homo, Christ Before Pilate, and Golgotha.
The musical light show in the Munkácsy Hall will offer a unique artistic experience that blends visual storytelling with music and illumination.
It has been exactly three decades since Munkácsy Mihály‘s painting Christ Before Pilate arrived in Debrecen for the first time. After its restoration, it was placed in the Munkácsy Hall alongside Golgotha and Ecce Homo. Thanks to the research of art historian Katalin Sz. Kürti – who conducted the joint presentation of the works – a “world premiere” took place on the site on August 25, 1995, which meant that after their painting, the Christ images were exhibited together for the first time in Debrecen. Since then, these paintings have become the best-known artistic monuments of our city.
The paintings depict the conflict between Christ and his accusers, and as a finale, the fulfillment of the word, Christ’s death on the cross. The special feature of the joint presentation of the works is that Munkácsy himself had never seen the three paintings depicting biblical themes exhibited together.

Don’t miss this special cultural event honoring one of Hungary’s greatest painters.
